SuperMonsterCity

Traveling Exhibits

Company Description:

America's Monsters, Superheroes, and Villains is an exhibition explores how American monsters, superheroes and villains have impacted American culture from the 1960’s to the 1990’s and became iconic characters reflecting America’s changing values and social stresses. In different guises, monsters, superheroes and villains have always been part of America’s cultural fabric. They scare us, thrill us, and most importantly, help guide us through the most terrifying and exhilarating moments of our lives.

These iconic American mythical characters document America’s creativity and ever changing culture, norms and conventions. Additionally, the exhibition highlights the artists, designers and creators behind these characters. Finally, the exhibition demonstrates how advancements in materials and manufacturing influenced toy design. The Toy Art movement began over 60 years ago and has been documented and celebrated from Museum of Contemporary Art to Museum of Modern Art.

In this exhibit attendees will see Dracula, Wolf Man, Frankenstein’s monster, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and others that have awed American audiences for generations. Also featured are American superheroes such as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, Captain America, and Luke Skywalker, all of whom have become archetypal American cultural figures across the decades. Finally, super villains are featured, including Darth Vader, the Joker, Lex Luthor and the Green Goblin, all of whom exploit America’s fears to their diabolical advantage.

This exhibition features toys, posters, video, packaging, and other items, and is organized around five main themes:
• Unintended Consequences: The Atomic Age and America’s Search for Identity
• Truth Justice and The American Way: Unifying a Country’s Identity
• Innocent Monsters: Our Empathy for Outsiders
• With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility: The Hero as Martyr
• Myths and Legends: How Star Wars Saved America
Additional cases include:
• A history of ‘Do-It-Yourself’ toys
• The evolution of articulation in toys
• A review of comic book censorship

SuperMonster市City! was co-founded by master collector David Barnhill and derived from his collection of 200,00 toys, posters, games, and films. Co-founder Stephen Yogi Rueff is Managing Director and Curator, placing the objects in social and political contexts through reflective and informative texts, artist profiles and commentary. Barnhill and Rueff enjoy sharing America’s iconic mythological figures from America’s Golden age of toys. contact us at Stephen@SuperMonsterCity.com or SuperMonsterCity.com
