Plains Art Museum

The Curator leads Indigenous exhibitions, collections, and public programs at the Plains Art Museum. This role involves planning and implementing exhibitions, developing interpretive materials, and collaborating with departments to create educational and public programming. Responsibilities include research, collections management, compliance with museum standards and NAGPRA, advising on acquisitions, and maintaining relationships with Indigenous communities. The position also supports exhibition logistics such as installation, art handling, and transportation.

 

Key Responsibilities:

•             Plan and manage Indigenous art exhibitions and related programs.

•             Ensure compliance with AAM and SMNAC standards; oversee repatriation processes.

•             Conduct research, documentation, and cataloging of Indigenous collections.

•             Collaborate across departments for interpretation, education, and engagement.

•             Maintain strong ties with Indigenous nations and organizations.

•             Assist with exhibition production and installation.

 

Requirements:

•             Degree in art history, museum studies, Native American/Indigenous studies, or related field.

•             Minimum 2 years of experience in collections or exhibitions.

•             Physical ability for art handling and installation; valid driver’s license.

•             Strong research, organizational, and communication skills.

•             Proficiency in Microsoft Office; willingness to learn museum software.
