As north central Wisconsin’s only accredited art museum, the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, located in Wausau, serves a largely rural, 15-county geographic area. Its diverse changing exhibitions and related education programs have garnered regional, national, and international recognition. The Institute of Museum and Library Services recognized the high quality of the Woodson Art Museum’s community engagement by awarding the Woodson the 2017 National Medal for Museum Service.

The Museum’s inaugural 1976 exhibition, Birds of the Lakes, Fields and Forests, evolved into the competitive international annual juried Birds in Art. Avian art and art of the natural world continue to guide the focus of the permanent collection, comprising more than 15,000 artworks.

The Collections Manager, reporting to the Director, serves as the principal custodian of the Woodson Art Museum’s collections. This position is responsible for registering and physically processing new acquisitions as well as managing the storage, access, and movement of the Museum’s accessioned objects. The Collections Manager also plans and implements programs and exhibitions drawn from the collections.

In addition to other duties, the Collections Manager:

·      Manages the care and organization of the collections

·      Undertakes collections research, including potential acquisitions and short- and long-term collections-based exhibitions

·      Works with the installation / deinstallation team to install / deinstall temporary and collections exhibitions

·      Coordinates incoming and outgoing transportation for all temporary exhibitions

·      Develops, maintains, and implements the Museum’s collections management policies and procedures

·      Oversees all facets of incoming acquisitions, including shipping and appropriate documentation

·      Manages on-premises storage; monitors climate controls in collection spaces

·      Assures the maintenance and creation of automated and paper records; maintains the Museum’s collections database

·      Manages collections emergency planning and training along with the Assistant Director and Facilities Manager

·      Conducts and maintains periodic inventories of the collections

Experience and Qualifications:

·      Art / Art History and/or Museum Studies background

·      Knowledge of concepts, principles, and practices of current museum registration methods and collections management standards

·      Ability to organize multiple tasks, establish priorities, and work collegially

·      Interest in and / or knowledge of nature and environmental / conservation issues

·      Attention to detail, efficiency, and ability to meet deadlines

·      Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form

·      Computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, Adobe Creative Suite, and familiarity with a museum collections database

·      Work requires physical exertion such as standing, bending, and lifting of moderate weights (up to 50 lbs.), especially in connection with the handling and packing of art objects and artwork installation

Job Type: Full-time, salaried, exempt

Starting Salary Range: $50,000-$55,000
