The Northwest Territory Museum Society on behalf of the Northwest Territory Museum – Campus Martius and the Ohio River Museum – in conjunction with our Management Partner Ohio History Connection, seeks:
Museum Executive Director
The Museum Executive Director is a dynamic and innovative leader responsible for the museums’ values and mission-based leadership for the delivery, quality, and ongoing improvement of the guest experience, staff excellence, and financial performance of the Museums. With an operating budget of $300,000 the Executive Director leads the creation, implementation, and coordination of the strategic plan for the Museums, insuring financial sustainability and successful delivery of the board’s vision.
· Provide integrative leadership to staff and volunteers for consistent direction, communication, organizational alignment, and visioning.
· Report to the board of directors encouraging their input and the utilization of their experience and expertise.
· Work closely with the board and staff, in developing and articulating the strategic direction of the Museums.
· Manage all day-to-day operations and directions.
· Observe and evaluate the staff’s abilities and their responsibilities.
· Have a thorough understanding of all museum operations and their nuances.
· Management of the fiscal stewardship of the entire organization.
· Understand the capital campaign in its entirety, and work with the board to formulate the next steps.
· Lead the development and marketing initiatives Represent the organization in fundraising and recruitment of donors, working side-by-side with Board members.
· Create and maintain a strong relationship with the Ohio History Connection by becoming familiar with the OHC’s other properties and their staff. Collaborate and capitalize on their expertise in interpretation, exhibit development, and fundraising.
· Serve as the public face for the Museums by representing the organization in all things and getting involved in the community.
· Have strong interaction with staff and patrons creating a personal one-on-one “market research.”
· Familiarize and evaluate the current exhibits and programming with a fresh eye from the point of view of the visitor.
· Create dynamic public history programming that drives attendance.
· Act in a leadership role to monitor public history trends and recommend appropriate programming to keep pace with a changing social environment.
· Demonstrate a deep passion for preserving history and excitement and share that passion with others.
· Engage key media resources and create strong public awareness of the organization.
· Work collaboratively with many constituencies: students, members, program partners, funders, schools, history groups, civic organizations, local and state units of government
· Plan, develop, and deliver a comprehensive, coordinated, diverse, inclusive, forward-looking museum.
· Lead the board and staff toward best practices for museums and board governance.
Education / Experience:
· Minimum Bachelor’s degree: Masters preferred in related management, development, museum studies, or history fields.
· Five years’ experience in museums or related experience in venues or attractions with at least seven years at a senior management level.
· Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
· Salary range $50,000 to $55,000.
· In addition to salary included is an annual $7,000 stipend toward benefits, i.e.., medical benefits, etc.
· Strong administrator.
· Demonstrated leadership and success in development and implementation of exhibits and public programming.
· Proven administrative, analytical, and strategic planning skills.
· Record of being a self-starter, leader, team builder, and problem solver.
· Experience managing staff and dealing with all human resource related matters including hiring, evaluating, and terminating employees.
· Proven financial ability to organize and manage a budget and to monitor ongoing financial performance.
· Demonstrated success in fundraising and community outreach with expertise in creating public and private partnerships.
· Experience in managing and guiding a board of directors.
· Effective communicator with proven ability to collaborate with individuals or diversified groups such as staff, government, business leaders, donors, and volunteers.
· Experience with capital campaigns and new museum planning.
