Position Statement

This position serves as an Exhibits Designer in the mission-critical Exhibits and Show Division of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum (ALPLM).  This position will work closely with the Exhibits Director and team to develop and execute new, temporary exhibits as well as update the permanent exhibits and facilitate the artifact rotations throughout the campus. The ideal candidate is creative, engaging, and open to new ideas. We invite qualified applicants to apply for the position to help ALPLM to continue to chronicle the life of one of our nation’s greatest Presidents and the history of Illinois.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Collaborates with project partners in the performance of research and development of creative ideas for existing, new, and changing exhibits.
  2. Performs planning and layout of prospective exhibits and designs and constructs exhibits with an attention to historical accuracy.
  3. Plans, coordinates and evaluates the necessity for equipment, tools, supplies, work crews, vendors and processes to ensure projects meet deadlines and finished products meet the demand for high-quality standards, including safety.
  4. Corresponds with and coordinates key exhibition stakeholders, including in-house ALPLM staff and, as needed, outside project partners and artifact lenders.
  5. Handles necessary arrangements when exhibits are shipped, including the support and handling of packing, unpacking, assembly, installation, and transportation of artifacts.
  6. Attends professional meetings and seminars related to exhibit planning, preparation, and up-to-date techniques.  Reviews current literature related to industry standard of exhibit development, techniques and processes.
  7. In consultation with the division director, assists ALPLM partners in exhibit development and preparation.
  8. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years college with coursework in art, history, anthropology, and/or sociology or a related field.
  2. Requires one-year professional experience in exhibits preparation and historical research such as might be acquired at a museum or similar institution.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Requires extensive knowledge of design and display techniques.
  2. Requires extensive knowledge of the methods, techniques, tools, and materials used in the preparation and care of historical artifacts.
  3. Requires working knowledge of American and Illinois History.
  4. Requires working knowledge of historical research methods and techniques and of professional library procedures.
  5. Requires working knowledge of various sources of available information which will facilitate the acquisition and display of historical artifacts.
  6. Requires ability to design and construct historical exhibits.
  7. Requires ability to use tools and materials in the preparation and care of historical artifacts.
  8. Requires ability to express ideas clearly and concisely.
  9. Prefers proficiency in Microsoft Office program Excel and Word.
  10. Prefers ability to perform arithmetic and basic mathematical calculations.

Conditions of Employment

  1. Requires ability to lift heavy weight; to bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist.
  2.  Requires ability to occasionally work unusual and / or prolonged hours in emergency or to meet tight deadlines.
  3. Requires occasional travel.
  4. Requires an appropriate valid driver’s licenses.
