The American Swedish Historical Museum welcomes all people to explore cultural identity through the story of Swedes and Scandinavians in America. The ASHM is a community dedicated to preserving and interpreting material culture, and is alive with celebrations, exhibitions, and learning experiences. Founded in 1926, the museum is the oldest Swedish museum in the United States.
The curator has the main responsibility for proposing, planning, and carrying out the museum’s exhibition program. He/she manages all out-going and in-coming loans, accessioning and deaccessioning, and research queries. He/she has the responsibility for all aspects of collections management, including storage, supervising conservation, and basic collections care. The museums’ collections include the museum building, interiors, objects and archives. He/she manages all out-going and in-coming loans, accessioning and deaccessioning, and research queries. He/she stewards relationships with members and potential donors to the collections. He/she gives group tours for adults as well as regular talks and presentations.
The curator is part of a 5 person full-time staff team and has the opportunity to work on a diverse array of projects. We are looking for a self-motivated, creative, dynamic person who is at ease working with a range of audiences and is inspired by the museum’s mission. The preferred candidate is a team-player who willingly joins in on a range of museum event, education and facility projects.
Requires a master’s degree in public or applied history; English; Art; Material Culture; Museum Studies or related field. Bachelor’s Degree accepted with 5+ years of curatorial experience. Qualifications include strong writing, research, editing, presentation, and interpersonal skills. Strong skills with Microsoft Office suite, must be able to lift 50 lbs and be able to use hand and power tools. Familiarity with Swedish history, culture and language; Scandinavian cultures and history; and/or 19th century American immigration history is preferred.
